How Hormonal Imbalances Contribute To Childhood Obesity and Diabetes

It is no secret here in the U.S. that the rates of Childhood obesity and diabetes continue to rise rampantly.  Childhood obesity had more than tripled in the last 30 years.  In 2008 more than 1/3 of children and adolescents were termed obese1. Diabetes is now the number one most common chronic disease in children under the age of 20 2.  The question is how are these two diseases linked? Popular belief is that if one eats too much sugar, they’ll get fat and develop diabetes; and, if they don’t get diabetes it’s merely because their body is producing enough insulin to keep up with the sugar. However, researchers have discovered evidence that there’s more to the obesity-diabetes connection than this classic way of thinking: The missing link? Leptin! A hormone that regulates blood sugar levels through two different brain-body passageways. One pathway responsible for controlling appetite and fat storage and the other responsible for telling the liver what to do with its’ stored glucose (sugar).

Research done by Dr. Ron Rosendale was the first to confirm the importance of proper function Leptin for insulin regulation in diabetes and obesity. An expert in Leptin himself states: “We are not a single life, but instead are a republic of cells and our health depends on how accurately the instructions are conveyed to those cells so that they can act in harmony. It further supports the notion that leptin may be “on top of the food chain” in metabolic importance and relevance to disease.”

How does this apply to your family, children, sister, brother, neighbor or friend?  In helping children and adults in our office recover from chronic obesity or diabetes it is first important to look for the interference to the two pathways of Leptin.  Recovering childhood diabetes and obesity can be as simple as removing this interference.  As stated these pathways are brain-body connections; therefore, the first logical place to look is to the connector between brain and body, which is the nervous system.  In a dis-regulation of Leptin in childhood diabetes and obesity the sympathetic nervous system has activated the hypothalamus to over-produced the hormone Leptin and the receptor sites to receive leptin messages (to stop eating and burn sugar stores) are broken down and fail.  Therefore, no magic leptin pill, drink or natural remedy will create leptin in your body and recover your disease; it is actually pertinent that the receptor sites are repaired and to remove the signals transmitting leptin production3.

What breaks down Leptin receptor sites and causes Leptin Resistance?

1. Fix your Subluxation:pressure on your nervous system causing dis-ease; impeding nerve flow to organs, tissues and cells.  Will cause up-regulation of leptin and down-regulation of pancreatic islet cells.  Action Step: Get your nervous system evaluated by a structural correction chiropractor.

2. Avoid BAD FATS–Bad fats such as hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils, trans fats, soybean oil, canola oil and vegetable oils cause heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, chronic fatigue, and neurotoxic syndrome. Bad fats create chronic inflammation throughout the body inducing disease and break down leptin receptor sites.

Choose instead: Good fats are essential to hormone production, cancer prevention, brain development, weight loss, cellular healing, and anti-inflammation

3. Change the MEATS that you EAT.  There are hundreds of studies that link commercial meats with cancer, heart disease and diabetes. The grain fed to animals that were created to eat grass changes fatty acid ratios (too much omega-6, not enough omega-3) and denatures good fats, leading to modern day disease. The bioaccumulation of commercial pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, and hormones in meats are causing a toxic onslaught, which leads to many cancers, neurological disorders and chronic illness and is a prime candidate in breaking down leptin receptors

Choose instead: Grass fed and free range meats offer many fatty acids missing in the Standard American Diet (SAD) such as: aracodonic acid, congegated linoleic acid, and Omega 3 fatty acid.

4. ALL Refined SUGARS and GRAINS.  This includes white rice, white pasta, and white bread. 1/3 sugar comes from soft drinks, 2/3 from hidden sources including: lunch meats, pizza, sauces, breads, soups, crackers, fruit drinks, canned foods, yogurt, ketchup, mayonnaise, etc. High glycemic or refined sugars cause elevated glucose, which elevates insulin leading to up-regulation of Leptin bombarding and breaking down leptin receptor sites.  Sugar has proven to cause premature aging and degenerative diseases including type II diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Sugar is an anti-nutrient offering insignificant amounts of vitamins and minerals and robbing your body of precious nutrient stores. This inevitably leads to diseases of the new millennium such as chronic fatigue, ADD, ADHD, heart disease, diabetes, and cancers.

Choose instead: Low glycemic carbohydrates in the forms of fruits and vegetables have high amounts of fiber, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that help you age slower, improve energy levels, lose weight, and naturally detoxify your cells.

It has been demonstrated time and again by implementing these action steps you can truly turn your childs’ health around or your whole families.  You can do anything you put your mind to just start moving.
