I talk a lot about the 5 Essentials being a necessary part of any healthy lifestyle. Perhaps the most surprising of those Essentials to many of my patients is “Maximized Mind.” Some may wonder if your mindset really affects your overall health, and I can tell you that it does. Keeping a healthy mindset requires practices like meditation, reading and surrounding yourself with supportive, positive people on a daily basis. If you aren’t doing those things, you may find yourself quickly falling into a “slump” of sorts. You may even find yourself experiencing brain fog or mild depression if you aren’t careful.
Our beliefs play a huge part in our ability to succeed. The mind is incredibly powerful in shaping our life experiences. If you think you can do something, you’ll be able to do it (barring supernatural abilities like flying or becoming invisible.) If you think you can’t do something, you’ve already resigned yourself to never being able.
By believing negative things about yourself, you greatly limit your potential to achieve your goals. Here are 5 common limiting beliefs that most of us hold or have held at one point in our lives. I want to encourage you to do away with these beliefs as quickly as possible and to replace them with a mindset that will move you toward success!
Belief #1: I’m not good enough.
If you believe you’re not good enough, you won’t be good enough. You can do anything you set your mind to! (Well, except for supernatural abilities, of course, but even that’s arguable.) Believe that you can and you will. I want you to take this belief and replace it with its opposite: you can do ANYTHING.
Belief #2: I have no time.
This is a common excuse among professionals. “There are only 24 hours in a day.”
Um… excuse me… only? That’s a lot of time, my friends. You sleep for 8 hours, which leaves 16 hours. Let’s assume you have a job that requires 8 to 9 hours of your time, including lunch, breaks and your commute. That leaves you with 7 hours. You can accomplish so much in 7 hours! You can certainly get in 12 minutes of intense exercise, 30 minutes of meditation/reading. Factor in 2-3 hours of time with your significant other/family, and you’re still left with 4-5 hours that you can spend accomplishing your business goals.
“I don’t have time” is an excuse that buys you a few more hours of unproductive activity like watching TV or perusing Facebook. Replace this limiting belief with “I don’t have time to waste!” and go out and accomplish your goals… like, yesterday.
Belief #3: It’s too expensive.
Many people think it’s too expensive to live a healthy lifestyle. But this is just another excuse. If you’re willing to cut out other expensive habits, such as going out to eat, cable TV, and your morning Starbucks coffee (all of which contribute to poor health), then you’ll have plenty to spend on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Not to mention, the diseases that come as a result of poor health are way more expensive to fix than the measures you can take now to prevent them from occurring.
Which would you rather do: spend thousands of dollars on surgeries and chemotherapy treatments that will leave you feeling miserable, or spend a few hundred a month on healthy organic foods, a gym membership, and regular chiropractic adjustments to prevent the surgeries and medications later?
Change this limiting belief. Instead of “It’s too expensive”—where “it’s”=”a healthy lifestyle”—say “sickness and disease are too expensive, so I’m going to invest in my health today to prevent illness tomorrow.”
Belief #4: It’s too hard to find.
Whether it’s the career of your dreams or the love of your life, the belief that “it’s too hard to find” is seriously holding you back! Many people will sit back and do nothing, convincing themselves that if it’s meant to be, it’ll find you. Not true! Happiness does not come to those who wait; it comes to those who work their butts off to make it happen!
Replace this limiting belief with the belief that whatever you’re looking for is waiting for you to find it, and don’t rest until you do. As a matter of fact, don’t rest even after you do, because cultivating that dream will be necessary to keeping it alive.
Belief #5: I can’t do it.
Going along with Belief #1, “I can’t do it” will forever crush your motivation to even try. And if you don’t try, you never will. As I said before, you can do anything you set your mind to! Believe that you can and you will.
